“I’VE BEEN THINKING,” Darcy said, pulling her knees up to her chest and spreading her prettiest red dress around to be sure her ankles were covered. She and Zach had reached their destination by a lovely, bubbly brook for their romantic picnic, and Mildred had smiled with glee at the idea of caring for Charlie for a few hours. Her friend had gone over everything again to help Darcy make the best fried chicken, buttermilk biscuits, creamy potato salad, and perfect rice pudding as possible. Her husband had spread the quilt out beneath a weeping willow tree providing them ample privacy. She’d unpacked their meal at a leisurely pace. Then they’d held hands and prayed while her husband thanked the Lord for His abundance.

“What about?” Zach inquired before biting into a fried chicken leg.

“Old Man Brompton,” she replied, bringing the part of the society column they’d read the night before to their minds. “Is it true he’s never been seen in Blossom by anyone? I thought he gave you Octavia, our milking cow.”

“Someone else brought her over to me, someone employed by him,” Zach explained between bites. “This is really delicious, Darcy. I think you’ve outdone yourself this time. It’s the best fried chicken I’ve ever had.”

She basked in his praise, but part of her didn’t believe him. She’d ruined so many meals, and even with her new cooking lessons she sometimes managed to burn or undercook things, add the wrong ingredients, or take shortcuts that ended disastrously. “Do you really think so, or are you just saying it?”

He nodded as he tasted more. “Absolutely delicious! Try some.”

She picked up a thigh and ate a small bite. The chicken tasted tender and juicy. Cooked perfectly, the coating had exactly the right seasonings and golden brown color. “It is good!” Maybe she’d finally mastered the meal, after all.

“Have you ever seen Mr. Brompton?” she asked, taking another bite of the delicious chicken.

His mouth full, Zach shook his head. He finished chewing and added, “Nope. I’ve never seen him, and to my knowledge, that part of the article happened to be true, except for the couple he hired who work for him. Is that rice pudding you’ve brought along for dessert?”

She nodded. “It is, but who are they? Have I met them?” she asked.

“Ruby and Jairus Campbell. They don’t attend services very often, but every now and again. No, you haven’t met them, but they came to our wedding and left before I could introduce them to you in our receiving line. Sadly, Old Man Brompton has never been to the church to my knowledge. As far as I know, no one has seen him before except the town banker and the claim agent for his farm. ”

“I’m glad the Campbell couple came to our wedding, but it’s very sad about this man living his life as a recluse.” She tried some of the potato salad, pleased that the potatoes weren’t undercooked. The flavors of chopped onion, green pepper, parsley, boiled eggs, and other seasonings had blended well.
